Urban migration is on the rise and thus the pressure on physical infrastructure is increasing more than ever. Housing in such dense urban contexts is becoming a critical issue. A solution for this housing crisis in urban areas would be redefining housing as micro-housing, with compact multifunctional spaces.
Volume Zero Competitions invited architects and designers to design stackable micro homes that maximized spatial use. The participants were to design a prototype of a micro-housing unit that reflects the culture and personal needs of a residential community. A proper aggregation of these micro-housing units was to be done in an urban context, reflecting the communal needs of the group of users.
The designed units had to cater to the individual’s personal needs (rest, bath, cooking, and work) and community requirements (interact). As per their preference, the participants were free to add more spaces required in their designs.
The participants crafted unique solutions targeting complex contexts. The top entries aced the challenge by curating innovative structures from micro homes that can not only solve the daunting urban housing crisis but also foster communal living.
Volume Zero thanks all the participating members and teams for their entries in the Micro Housing 2019 Architecture Competition!
