We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our jury member of the TINY LIBRARY 2023 Architecture competition.

We’re delighted to speak with Ar. Ahmad Thaneem, a founder of the firm “3dor Concepts”, graduated from the College of Engineering-CET Trivandrum. 3dor Concepts is an interdisciplinary, architecture and design firm started in 2016 by three enthusiastic young Architects. The firm believes that design has the power to transform lives and enhance communities and they have expertise in residential, commercial, interior, and landscape designs and also in mobility, product, and graphic designs. However, the firm is growing overseas and its clientele extends to the UAE.

The studio aims to build beautiful, progressive buildings and environments that should be excellent in terms of design functionality, and comfort.

We're excited to speak with him about his perspective on the field of architecture and their expectation from the participants of the Tiny Library 2023 architecture competition. For the purpose of this interview, he would be referred to as AT in responses, however, Volume Zero is referred to as VZ.

VZ: Owing to your tremendous expertise with projects, what do you think is the future of the public Library? How should the Library of the future serve society?
AT: Considering the future, a public library should have modern technologies incorporated into its traditional design so that it eventually acts as a gathering space for people to share knowledge. Technology is a huge part of the upcoming society, and it should not be neglected.

VZ: What is your and your team's thought process when designing buildings that have a high impact on people?
AT: In simple terms, it should be a noteworthy design that both attracts and make them think simultaneously. People should love to spend their time.

VZ: Can you give us a little insight into what’s it like to work with you (The firm's culture, design approach, and out-of-the-box ideas for designing projects)
AT: The firm should not follow any particular style. It should explore different styles and one project shouldn’t be like the previous one that we did…simple as that.

House of Noushad

VZ: What are some of your favorite projects/projects that you worked on? (What were the most exciting parts about it)
AT: One of our favorites is residential projects as they are more personalized and convey a play of emotions in them. A public library is such a project that shares a sense of emotion.

VZ: What has been your most challenging project? (What were the challenges faced with (topography, local climate, structure, clients, people, etc)
AT: HOUSE IN THE BACKYARD is a residential project designed in the backyard of an existing house. The space was narrow wedge-shaped and the concern of keeping the privacy of both houses, in the end, turned out well.

House of Noufal

VZ: What kind of submissions are you looking forward to seeing from the participants? Are there any areas where one should pay attention while designing a Tiny Library?
AT: A public library should be one that has an impact on society through its exterior features. Furthermore, it should serve its functionality well. A design approach that tackles both what is expected.

VZ: And finally, what would be your word of advice for all the young budding students and architects who are looking to make a mark in this professional world?
AT: To all the young architects, constant exposure to the latest architectural innovations and materials, and make your design unique and out of the box while keeping it away from the current trend helps to be distinct.
