Introduction
The world is growing at a break-neck speed today and future generations will need to cope with constant variations. Educating them in a way that molds and equips them to face the unforeseen future is now crucial.
Education can also help in the eradication of many social evils such as poverty, poor health, scarcity of food and water, pollution and other stigmas. However, access to education remains a distant dream in many parts of the developing world. Millions around the world lose the opportunity to learn, owing to inaccessible locations and lack of facilities, a situation that needs immediate attention and remediation.
Volume Zero Competitions invited architects, designers, and thinkers to rethink the institutions of education in locations where they remain inaccessible. Participants had to come up with a social architecture that facilitated education and fostered community interactions.
The program required building a new image of a school having multipurpose educational spaces that would serve as a community center post-school hour. Several participants came up with innovative design solutions for troubled contexts where these reimagined schools would catalyze social change.
Volume Zero thanks all the participating members and teams for their entries in the RE School 2018 Architecture Competition!
