Introduction
Volume Zero invited architects, designers, environmentalists, students, enthusiasts, and others to imagine a way of living in the lap of nature. These habitats were to be imagined in extreme contexts and with minimal intervention to the surroundings, thereby preserving the pre-existing topography and also maximizing the human-nature connection through the designs.
Participants were to design a comfortable living accommodation that was a unique way of experiencing the surroundings. The House should have been a self-sufficient dwelling habitat for 4 individuals with an area not exceeding 450 sq. ft built up. Proposals had to consider spatial flexibility as a vital aspect of all the designs fulfilling all the needs of their users.
Choosing a well-justified site was crucial for this architecture contest. The selected site that was wrapped in nature could be in the midst of coastal areas, deserts, oases, atop mountains, hanging against a cliff, oceans, saltpans, forests, riverbanks, mountains, forests, remote islands, on snowclad peaks, etc. Participants were encouraged to explore site conditions wherein human inhabitation would get challenging.
In response to the challenging brief, many entrants came up with sites in troubled locations and proposed creative design solutions for the respective terrains. The winning and honourable entries created unconventional homes that were underground, floating, hanging by the cliff, etc. With remarkable proposals, each team targeted and solved complex problems through their designs.
Volume Zero thanks all the participating members and teams for their entries in the Extreme Habitat 2022 Architecture Competition!
