Access to education remains a luxury in select parts of the world. Formal education often comes with its own set of systemic requirements and restrictions. However, what remains a powerful source of imparting knowledge in the ever-changing world are books. These torchbearers of knowledge are often incubated in the sacred space called a library.
These educational incubators must not only shed light on conventional means of knowledge but also encourage their users to interact, share ideas and grow together. With the Tiny Library architecture competition, we urged architects, designers, thinkers, and innovators, to rethink a library of the 21st century as a public space that ignites the new age learning movement. This space must be designed as a centralized think tank for the local communities with a focus on activities and functions of public interactions and community development.
The proposals were to be designed for rural or remote locations and could be stationary or mobile, having human and nature connections. They should have also been adaptable and replicable to suit other contexts. Apart from the conventional library spaces, the participants were encouraged to provoke innovative activities that stimulated learning through the design.
The top entries of the Tiny Library architecture contest not only reinvented the purpose of a library but also redefined its power. From being a temple for hoarding knowledge to becoming tools of empowerment for villagers, the designs extended the horizons of creativity.
Volume Zero thanks all the participating members and teams for their entries in the Tiny Library 2023 Architecture Competition!
