The world is evolving rapidly and so are the lifestyles of people, as they have been migrating to the cities. This quest has given rise to opportunities in the realm of urban housing, where homes are not just shelters, but facilitators of better lifestyles. As more and more people are moving to cities, urban homes are becoming versatile entities – doubling up as offices, play areas, work-out zones, and spaces for interaction and recreation, transformative, multi-purpose, and evolving to adapt to us.
The Dwelling 2023 Architecture Competition invited architects, designers, students, and enthusiasts around the world, to create inventive architectural solutions challenging the conventions of the present-day Archetype of a Home and called for a sense of living based on community spirit. These unconventional homes were to infuse the traditional sense of communal living within the space-savvy urban homes.
Arranged in self-contained, well-integrated communities, the residential units were to embody simplicity, innovation, creativity and spatial versatility. These novel residential communities learnt from our past, adapted to our present and anticipated our future, which would ultimately foster thriving communities.
Participants were expected to create functional, aesthetically pleasing designs that cater to the personal and communal needs of its inhabitants. The proposed archetypes would address space constraints, maximize functionality, and reflect the cultural identity of the community. The site for the same could be any relevant urban context.
Most of the winning entries of this architecture competition tapped into social issues and solved complex urban problems through the designs of dwellings while catering to the individual and social needs of the residents. While some sought to provide solutions for the less privileged and homeless people, others looked into gentrification, redevelopment and reimaging massive social housing schemes.
Volume Zero thanks all the participating members and teams for their entries in The Dwelling Architecture Competition 2023!
