Introduction
Access to education remains a distant dream in many remote parts of the world even today. Lack of proper infrastructure and resources are the primary reasons for this problem. In such contexts, people need to maximize their skills and abilities with whatever they have at hand. Books are considered to be the torchbearers for knowledge, helping mankind develop its intellect and create a world that is constantly developing.
Providing incubators of education in the form of libraries is an effective way of ensuring people living in remote locations get access to basic education. Rather than accepting urban migration as a given, a library can be designed to restore dignity and induce development.
Volume Zero Competition invited designers to create a Tiny Library that would aid the educational process of the communities living in remote contexts. This would be designed as a centralized think tank for the local communities with a focus on public interactions and community development. Participants had to consider affordability and optimum use of space while designing.
Many entries had iconic, inviting proposals that created a statement of their own on the chosen site. Their proposed design also had contact between humans and nature. The winning designs modelled innovative architecture that encouraged self-learning as well as strengthened the communal spirit.
Volume Zero thanks all the participating members and teams for their entries in the Tiny Library 2019 Architecture Competition!
